Announcing: Art as Social Action!
Our exhibition at the Queens Museum, a long-time community partner, celebrates 10 years of SPQ by exhibiting works our alumni created after their graduation. Art as Social Action will open on March 24th and will remain open until July 25th! Our skillful artists are Alix Camacho-Vargas, Barrie Cline, Cody Herrmann, Cristina Ferrigno, Erin Turner, Floor Grootenhuis, Jeff Kasper, Julian Louis Phillips, Pedro Felipe, and Naomi Kuo!
Art as Social Action opens in conjunction with the launch of the Queens Museum’s “Year of Uncertainty” which will be shaped by five themes: Care, Repair, Play, Justice, and The Future. Consequently, these themes are also central to the socially engaged works of our alumni. Works such as “Notes on (Dis)Placement” by Julian Louis Phillips, which discusses gentrification, and “prototypes for white flags” by Jeff Kasper both embody themes of Justice, Care, and The Future.
In addition to alumni works, our exhibition will feature public programs hosted by current students and alumni. Public programs will be available virtually and in person, adhering to social distancing guidelines, and are to be announced!
Lastly, a publication will accompany the exhibition with contributions from Tom Finkelpearl (Queens Museum Director, 2002-2014), SPQ co-founder Maureen Connor and Prerana Reddy (Queens Museum Director of Public Events, 2005-2018), Kendra Sullivan (Associate Director, Center for the Humanities, CUNY Graduate Center) and SPQ co-directors Chloë Bass and Gregory Sholette, Anlisa Outar (CUNY Cultural Corps), and current Queens Museum staff.
We are extremely excited to celebrate our artists and hope you can join us in whatever capacity possible!
