Home of Practice
Sat, August 19, 2017 – Tue, August 29, 2017
Opening reception: Friday, August 18 at 6 PM – 8 PM
Please join Social Practice Queens in celebrating the opening of HOME OF PRACTICE, an exhibit of recent work by Jeff Kasper, Erin Turner, Floor Grootenhuis, Paula Frisch, Maria K. Karlberg-Levin, Pedro Vintimilla, Tara Homasi, and Julian Phillips.Inflected by their pedagogical participation in the “House of Dust by Alison Knowles” in the James Gallery in Fall 2016, these artists from Social Practice Queens have developed their own distinct methods and forms to investigate human interaction. Variously personal, language-based, performative, or deeply labor-intensive, the projects propose artmaking as a method for navigation, reflection, and innovation in everyday life. Home of Practice extends the metaphor of the house: what does it mean to develop imaginary architectures into ways of being together?Social Practice Queens is a unique program bringing together the resources of an academic research institution, Queens College (City University of New York: CUNY), with the long-standing community-based activism of the Queens Museum . SPQ integrates studio work with social, tactical, interventionist and cooperative forms. Home of Practice is organized by the James Gallery Curator Katherine Carl and Queens College Assistant Professor Chloë Bass.
The exhibit will remain on view through August 29th, 2017. For gallery hours, please visit: https:// www.centerforthehumanities. org/james-gallery/ exhibitions/spq-tbc
